I had a birthday this week. 26 years old, no longer classed as youth. I certainly felt old when I went to a hip hop gig last night to see TZU. I saw them like 5 years ago and they were really cool and young. Last night they looked much older. They were still a bit cool though. They must be growing up – like me. It scares me a bit that I might look old but you know what I think I might ready to be 26.
“The city sucks, it doesn’t blow.”
I went on a school walk with Marcus today. Urban Seed does education stuff with schools around Victoria and Marcus decided to tell this class of about 50 people that the city sucks, not blows. He was refering to the fact that the city is the centre of much of society and that is sucks people into it rather than pushing them away from it, but I still couldn’t help but laugh. He says to them make sure you don’t write on your exam that you learnt that the city sucks.
I went to a “Homeless not Artless” show tonight. A bit of a wanky name but you get the vibe. I took some of the guys from the writing group at Credo and they all thought it was much better than they thought it was going to be. ”Homeless, not Artless” was a whole pile of Big Issue vendors and friends reading poetry and prose. They were all amazing and so deep and profound and funny. One guy wrote about coming off drugs, others about love and sex and others wanted to express the role of God and Jesus in their lives. I breathe here because this makes me happy. At the end there was a question time and I asked what motivated them to keep writing. The answers consisted of venting, the therapeutic nature, expression, being a creative person and the sense of belonging in the group and being able to share what they had written. It really motivated me to keep on going with my group which I love, it’s just it takes energy.
